How long does electrical work take?
A socket or switch swap is usually under an hour. A consumer unit replacement is typically a full day, often with the power off for several hours. A full rewire in an occupied property commonly takes 5 to 10 days depending on size and access, plus time afterwards for plastering and redecorating that isn't part of the electrical work itself.
Solar panels and battery storage wiring
Solar PV and battery storage installation is specialist work, usually done by an MCS-certified installer rather than a general electrician, and needs its own isolation switches and a compliant connection to your consumer unit. Your energy supplier and network operator also need to be notified before or after installation, depending on system size.
Shared supplies in flats and converted buildings
In a converted property, it's worth checking whether your flat has its own independent consumer unit and meter, or shares a supply with other flats via a landlord's distribution board. Shared supplies can complicate straightforward jobs and sometimes need freeholder permission before any work starts — check this before booking rather than on the day.
Electrical safety for landlords
Since 2020, landlords in England must have an EICR carried out every 5 years and provide a copy to tenants. Failing to do so can result in a fine of up to £30,000. If an EICR flags unsatisfactory work, it has to be fixed within 28 days or a shorter period the report specifies.
Electrical upgrades: EV chargers, solar PV & smart home systems
Beyond repairs, many electricians now fit EV charging points, solar PV inverters and battery storage, and smart home systems — app-controlled lighting, heating and security. These jobs usually need a separate circuit and, for EV chargers, a dedicated consumer unit way — worth checking your existing setup can support the extra load before booking.
Electrics in bathrooms — zone rules explained
UK wiring regulations split a bathroom into zones (0, 1, 2, and outside zones) based on distance from water, and each zone restricts what can be fitted and to what IP (ingress protection) rating. A standard socket can't go in zone 1, for example. This is why bathroom electrical work is notifiable under Part P — it's assessed against these zones, not just wired like any other room.
Christmas lights and extension lead safety
Overloading a single socket with extension leads and adaptors, especially outdoors or over the festive period, is one of the more common causes of a winter electrical fault. Outdoor lights need outdoor-rated (IP-rated) connectors, and it's worth having sockets checked before peak season if your property's wiring is older.

Running power to a detached garage or workshop means an armoured cable, usually buried, and its own consumer unit or sub-board with RCD protection at the supply end. If you're planning to run power tools or an EV charger from it, size the supply for that from the start — upgrading later usually means digging the cable run up again.
