Heating emergencies — what to do
If you smell gas, don't use any electrical switches, don't light a flame, turn off the gas supply at the meter if it's safe to reach, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before calling a heating engineer. For no heat or hot water without a gas smell, check the boiler pressure and any error code before assuming a full breakdown.

Heating engineers install, service and repair boilers and central heating systems: annual boiler services, fault diagnosis, radiator installation and balancing, powerflushing, and full system replacements. A straightforward like-for-like boiler swap is usually a one-day job. Moving the boiler's location, or a full system replacement including radiators, commonly takes 2-4 days. An annual service is typically under an hour.

Cost depends on the type of system (combi vs system vs conventional), whether it's a straightforward swap or a full system change, boiler brand and output size, and property access. Boiler warranties and workmanship guarantees
Manufacturer warranties on new boilers commonly run 5-10 years, but usually require annual servicing by a registered engineer to stay valid — check whether it has to be the same installer or any Gas Safe engineer. This is separate from any workmanship guarantee the engineer offers on their own installation work.
Air source heat pumps, what to know
A heat pump extracts heat from outside air even in cold weather, and typically runs at a lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, which usually means larger radiators or underfloor heating for the same comfort level. Installation is a bigger job than a boiler swap and government grant schemes (like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme) can offset some of the cost.
When to replace vs keep existing radiators
Radiators themselves rarely need replacing unless damaged, corroded, or you're changing the property's heat demand (e.g. adding a heat pump, which often needs larger radiators to run at a lower temperature). A power flush can often extend a radiator's working life significantly cheaper than replacement.
