Garage and workshop power
Running power to a detached garage or workshop means an armoured cable, usually buried, and its own consumer unit or sub-board with RCD protection at the supply end. If you're planning to run power tools or an EV charger from it, size the supply for that from the start — upgrading later usually means digging the cable run up again.
Solar panels and battery storage wiring
Solar PV and battery storage installation is specialist work, usually done by an MCS-certified installer rather than a general electrician, and needs its own isolation switches and a compliant connection to your consumer unit. Your energy supplier and network operator also need to be notified before or after installation, depending on system size.
Outdoor and garden electrics
Outdoor sockets, garden lighting, and supplies to sheds or outbuildings need weatherproof (IP-rated) fittings and their own RCD protection — standard indoor sockets and cabling aren't rated for outdoor use. This is notifiable work under Part P if it involves a new circuit.
Three steps to hiring the right electrician
First, confirm they're registered with NICEIC or NAPIT and ask to see their registration number. Second, get a written quote that itemises labour and materials separately, not just a total. Third, ask what certificate you'll receive when the work's done — for notifiable work, you're entitled to a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
Rewiring a listed or period property
Listed building consent can be needed for chasing cable runs into original plaster or masonry, even though the electrical work itself is assessed the same way as any other property under Part P. Conduit and surface-mounted cabling are sometimes used instead of chasing into walls specifically to avoid this — worth discussing with an electrician who's worked on listed properties before.
Electrical upgrades: EV chargers, solar PV & smart home systems
Beyond repairs, many electricians now fit EV charging points, solar PV inverters and battery storage, and smart home systems — app-controlled lighting, heating and security. These jobs usually need a separate circuit and, for EV chargers, a dedicated consumer unit way — worth checking your existing setup can support the extra load before booking.
Signs your property needs rewiring
Round-pin sockets, fabric or rubber-insulated cabling, a fuse box with a wooden back, or lights that dim when an appliance switches on are all signs the wiring is overdue for replacement. Most UK wiring is rated to last 30 to 40 years before it needs a full rewire.
LED lighting and energy-saving rewires
Swapping halogen downlights for LEDs is usually straightforward, but older dimmer switches often aren't compatible with LED drivers and need replacing alongside the bulbs, or you'll get flickering or a limited dimming range. If you're rewiring a room anyway, it's worth speccing LED-compatible circuits from the start rather than fixing dimmer compatibility later.
