Why Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement
Anyone installing, servicing or repairing a gas appliance or gas pipework in the UK must by law be on the Gas Safe Register, which replaced CORGI in 2009. This covers boilers, gas fires and gas cookers. Using an unregistered engineer for gas work isn't just risky, it's illegal, and any resulting certificate isn't valid.
Gas fires and stoves — same Gas Safe rule applies
Installing or servicing a gas fire, gas stove, or gas oven/hob is gas work under the same legal framework as a boiler — it must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified in that specific appliance category, not just any gas-qualified engineer, since categories are appliance-specific.
Electric boilers, pros and cons
Electric boilers avoid combustion entirely (no flue, no CO risk, no Gas Safe requirement) but electricity typically costs more per unit than gas, so running costs can be higher for the same heat output. They suit smaller properties or as a backup rather than being the default choice for most UK homes.
Common heating engineer jobs
Heating engineers install, service and repair boilers and central heating systems: annual boiler services, fault diagnosis, radiator installation and balancing, powerflushing, and full system replacements. Many also work on unvented hot water cylinders and, increasingly, heat pumps and other low-carbon heating.
Grants and schemes for heating upgrades
Government schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offer grants toward heat pump installations (not gas boilers). Eligibility and amounts change, so check current details with your installer or the scheme's own guidance rather than assuming a figure quoted a while ago still applies.
Solar thermal (hot water) systems
Solar thermal panels heat water directly (different from solar PV, which generates electricity) and work alongside a conventional boiler or immersion heater as backup for when there isn't enough sun. They need a compatible cylinder with an extra heating coil, so retrofitting to an existing system isn't always straightforward.
Why some radiators run cold
A radiator cold at the top usually means trapped air (fixed by bleeding); cold at the bottom usually means sludge build-up (may need a powerflush). A radiator that's cold all over while others work fine often points to a closed valve or a balancing issue across the whole system, not a fault with that radiator itself.
Combi vs system vs conventional boilers
A combi heats water on demand with no tank or cylinder, suits smaller properties with one bathroom. A system boiler uses a hot water cylinder but no cold water tank, better where several taps might run at once. A conventional (regular) boiler uses both a tank and cylinder, common in older or larger properties, or where mains pressure is poor.
