Christmas lights and extension lead safety
Overloading a single socket with extension leads and adaptors, especially outdoors or over the festive period, is one of the more common causes of a winter electrical fault. Outdoor lights need outdoor-rated (IP-rated) connectors, and it's worth having sockets checked before peak season if your property's wiring is older.
How long does electrical work take?
A socket or switch swap is usually under an hour. A consumer unit replacement is typically a full day, often with the power off for several hours. A full rewire in an occupied property commonly takes 5 to 10 days depending on size and access, plus time afterwards for plastering and redecorating that isn't part of the electrical work itself.
New build and extension electrical work
Wiring an extension or new build from scratch is different from rewiring an existing room — it's planned around final wall positions and fittings before plastering, so timing with your builder matters. First-fix electrical work (cabling inside walls) has to happen before plastering; second-fix (sockets, switches, fittings) after.
NICEIC & NAPIT registration explained
NICEIC and NAPIT are the two largest government-authorised Competent Person Schemes for electrical work in the UK. Joining requires a recognised qualification (City & Guilds 2382, the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, plus a Level 3 NVQ and City & Guilds 2391 for inspection and testing), and ongoing assessment. A registered electrician can self-certify notifiable work without a separate council inspection.
Single phase vs three phase supply
Most UK homes run on a single-phase electricity supply, which is enough for typical household use. Larger properties, workshops, or homes adding multiple EV chargers or heavy machinery sometimes need a three-phase supply instead — this is arranged with the network operator, not just your electrician, and can take weeks.
Electrics in bathrooms — zone rules explained
UK wiring regulations split a bathroom into zones (0, 1, 2, and outside zones) based on distance from water, and each zone restricts what can be fitted and to what IP (ingress protection) rating. A standard socket can't go in zone 1, for example. This is why bathroom electrical work is notifiable under Part P — it's assessed against these zones, not just wired like any other room.
Electrics in kitchens — circuits for appliances
A kitchen refit usually means new dedicated circuits for higher-draw appliances (oven, hob, dishwasher) rather than sharing a single ring main, plus RCD protection for anywhere near a sink. If you're changing the kitchen layout, plan socket and circuit positions before the units go in — moving them afterwards means lifting worktops or units again.
What does an RCD do?
A residual current device cuts power within milliseconds if it detects current leaking to earth — the main protection against electric shock from a faulty appliance or damaged cable. Modern consumer units have RCD protection built in across multiple circuits (RCBOs); older ones may only protect part of the property.
